Australia
Images made during a two month-long journey through Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
One of the most striking aspects of this trip was the vastness of the landscapes and the extremely low population density. The population of Western Australia is just 2.2 million despite the state being 5 times the size of either Texas or France. This statistic is all the more remarkable when one considers that three quarters of the people live in Perth; move outside of the state capital and you are quickly surrounded in isolation. While distances between sites of particular interest were huge, there were constantly changing landscapes and plenty of wildlife opportunities to distract me. The light was fantastic and never disappointed in the golden hours of post-dawn and pre-sunset.
I travelled with my brother. We rented a campervan for the first few weeks and drove from Perth to Broome. This allowed us complete flexibility to shoot the photographic interest in favourable light... if the late afternoon light or harsh mid-day light was not favourable for a particular location then we just slept there and tried again in the dawn light.
We then took an organised safari through the Kimberley and Mitchell areas as it is not possible to access certain remote spots without specialised equipment and knowledge. A GHAN train journey to the ‘Red Centre’ and a flight back to Perth completed the loop and a fantastic trip!
