The Royal temple complex of Candi Prambanan is one of the world's greatest Hindu temple complexes. It was built in the 9th century AD to honour the Hindu God Shiva but quickly abandoned when the Royal Court moved elsewhere in Java. Several earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have damaged the 240 temples and the most recent earthquake was in 2006. Prambanan achieved UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1991.
