The speckled Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins of Monkey Mia are being studied by a group of international scientists. These dolphins develop speckles on their underside when they become sexually mature and the researchers are trying to determine whether it is a critical level of a progestogen in their blood that causes this development.
An American researcher explained that the dolphin in the picture was snacking on garfish. To catch them he rapidly swam on his back, trapping the fish between himself and the air. The dolphin then reduced his depth until he could easily catch them. The dolphin was part of a larger party of 20 animals. After dark we had a fire on the beach and could hear the high pitched communication between hunting dolphins and the splash of fish as they tried to escape the dolphins.
